ハイポイドギアの設計は、従来のベベルギアと似ています。ピッチ面は円錐形ではなく双曲線で、歯はらせん状になっています。この形状により、同等のベベルギアのピニオンよりも大きなピニオンを使用できます。ハイポイドギアの全体的な設計により、大径のシャフトと大きなピニオンに対応できます。ベベルギアとウォームギアの中間的な存在と言えるでしょう。
乗用車においては、ハイポイドギアはほぼ普遍的に採用されています。その滑らかな動作、ピニオンの強度向上、そして軽量化により、多くの車両用途において魅力的な選択肢となっています。また、車高が低くなるという利点もあります。これらの利点から、主要な自動車メーカーはすべてハイポイド駆動アクスルを採用するようになりました。ただし、ベベルギアに比べて効率が劣る点には注意が必要です。
ハイポイドギアの最も基本的な設計特性は、噛み合い領域全体で線接触を維持することです。つまり、ピニオンとリングギアが一定の角度で回転すると、噛み合い領域全体で線接触が維持されます。その結果得られる伝達比は、ピニオンとリングギアの角度増加量に等しくなります。そのため、ハイポイドギアはヘリカルギアとも呼ばれます。
